At his first appearance live on Pay-Per-View Yuriorkis Gamboa will face Whyber Garcia from Panama on October 10th at legendary Madison Square Garden. For "El Ciclon" this will not only be the first fight at the "Mecca of boxing"; it will also be his first defence of the WBA featherweight title he won by outclassing Jose "Cheo" Rojas on April 17th in Primm, Nevada.
Garcia will enter the ring with a record of 22 wins (including 15 kos) and 6 losses. The 28-year-old challenger has already attempted to capture the WBA super featherweight championship against Jorge Linares in November 2008. Linares stopped Garcia in five rounds; now the man from Panama is seeking his chance at the lower weight class against Gamboa.
"I will certainly not underestimate my opponent", states "El Ciclon". "Everybody won qualifies to fight for a world title has the abilities to win the fight and will do all it takes to become champion. Still I know what I am capable of and I am sure that nobody can beat me as long as I enter the ring well prepared. That is why my whole concentration is on Garcia now. I want to blow him away to entertain my fans and defend my champion title."
"Island Warriors - Latin Fury 12" is co-promoted by ARENA Box-Promotion, Top Rank and PR Best Boxing. The show also features Gamboa's fellow Cuban Olympic gold medallist Odlanier Solis taking on "Kingpin" Kevin Johnson in a WBC Elimination bout.
